How to Protect Your Vehicle Before Winter

Vehicle Winter Protection in Ontario

Ontario winters can be tough on vehicles. Snow and freezing temperatures are only part of the problem. Road salt, sand, slush, moisture and debris can take a toll on your vehicle throughout the season. Preparing your vehicle before winter arrives can make it easier to maintain, help preserve its appearance and provide additional protection to some of its most vulnerable surfaces. But what kind of protection does your vehicle actually need?

Here’s what you should know before the snow starts falling

Why Is Winter So Hard on Your Vehicle?

During an Ontario winter, your vehicle is constantly exposed to a combination of road salt, moisture, dirt, sand and debris. Salt and grime can build up quickly on paint, wheels, glass, trim and other exterior surfaces. At the same time, sand, stones and debris kicked up by other vehicles can increase the chance of chips and physical damage, particularly on high-impact areas at the front of the vehicle.

This is why we recommend thinking about winter protection before the roads are covered in salt and slush.

Start With a Proper Exterior Cleaning

Before applying any form of protection, the vehicle should be properly cleaned and prepared.

Simply applying a product over contaminated paint isn't going to provide the same result as starting with a properly prepared surface.

Depending on the condition of the vehicle, preparation may include:

  • Thorough exterior hand wash
  • Wheel and tire cleaning
  • Chemical decontamination
  • Clay bar treatment
  • Removal of embedded contaminants
  • Inspection of the paint and exterior surfaces

Once the vehicle is clean, you can decide what level of protection makes the most sense for how you use it.

Option 1: Seasonal Winter Protection

For someone looking for a straight forward way to prepare their vehicle for the upcoming season, a short-term sealant can be a great option. At Jet Stream Detailing, our Winter Protection Package includes an exterior wash and short-term sealant designed to help repel salt, slush and grime from the paint, glass and rims.

The protection generally lasts through the winter months, approximately six months depending on vehicle use, maintenance and environmental conditions. This is a great option for drivers who want seasonal protection without committing to a longer-term coating.

Option 2: Ceramic Coating

For longer-term protection, ceramic coating takes things a step further. A ceramic coating creates a durable, hydrophobic layer over the surfaces it is applied to. Water, dirt and road grime have a harder time sticking to the surface, which can make regular winter washing and maintenance considerably easier. Ceramic coating can also provide resistance against environmental contamination, UV exposure and chemicals. One important distinction is that ceramic coating does not protect against stone chips or physical impacts. That is where Paint Protection Film comes in.

Option 3: Paint Protection Film (PPF)

If stone chips and road debris are your main concern, Paint Protection Film, commonly called PPF, provides a physical layer of protection over the paint.

Winter can be especially hard on high-impact areas such as:

  • Front bumper
  • Hood
  • Fenders
  • Mirrors
  • Headlights
  • A-pillars
  • Front of the roof
  • Rocker panels

At Jet Stream Detailing, we install STEK DYNOshield Paint Protection Film. DYNOshield features a hydrophobic top coat, self-healing properties, high clarity, UV-resistant and anti-yellowing adhesives, and strong puncture resistance. It is backed by a 10-year warranty. We also custom hand-cut install our PPF rather than relying on pre-cut kits. This allows us to extend the film beyond panel edges and wrap and tuck edges wherever applicable, creating cleaner coverage and a more seamless finished appearance.

Ceramic Coating vs. PPF for Winter

This is one of the most common misconceptions when it comes to vehicle protection. Ceramic coating and PPF do different jobs.

Ceramic coating is primarily about protecting the surface from environmental contamination while creating hydrophobic properties that make the vehicle easier to clean and maintain.

PPF provides a physical barrier designed to protect the paint from stone chips, scratches and road debris. For drivers looking for more comprehensive protection, the two can also be used together. PPF can be installed on high-impact areas, or even the entire vehicle, while ceramic coating can be applied to protected and unprotected exterior surfaces.

Don't Forget About Your Wheels

Your paint isn't the only part of your vehicle exposed to winter conditions. Wheels can accumulate significant amounts of road salt, grime and brake dust throughout the season. Regular cleaning helps prevent this buildup from sitting on the surface for extended periods. For additional protection, wheel coatings can make the surfaces easier to maintain and help reduce how strongly contaminants adhere.

Should You Still Wash Your Vehicle During Winter?

Yes. Protection doesn't mean you can stop washing your vehicle. PPF, ceramic coatings and sealants can make maintenance easier, but salt and grime should still be removed regularly. Whenever temperatures and conditions allow, washing your vehicle throughout the winter helps prevent excessive contamination from building up.

Pay particular attention to areas where salt and grime tend to collect, including the wheels, wheel wells, rocker areas and lower sections of the vehicle.

Which Winter Protection Is Right for You?

There isn't one solution that's right for every vehicle.

If you're primarily looking for affordable seasonal protection, a winter sealant may be all you need.

If you want longer-term hydrophobic properties and easier maintenance, consider a ceramic coating.

If your biggest concern is preventing stone chips and damage from road debris, PPF provides physical protection that coatings and sealants cannot.

And if you want both impact protection and easier maintenance, PPF and ceramic coating can be combined.

The right choice depends on your vehicle, how much you drive, how long you plan to keep it and the level of protection you're looking for.

Prepare Your Vehicle Before Winter Arrives

The best time to think about winter protection isn't after the roads are already covered in salt. Preparing your vehicle ahead of the season gives you an opportunity to properly clean the exterior, address existing contamination and apply protection before the harshest conditions arrive. At Jet Stream Detailing in Dorchester, Ontario, we offer detailing, seasonal winter protection, ceramic coatings and Paint Protection Film packages depending on the level of protection you're looking for.
